- Sweetness, browning, and softness. In semi-moist treats sugar also binds water so the piece stays chewy.

- Not acutely toxic. The concern is chronic: pets have no dietary requirement for added sugar; it adds calories and nothing else.
- Interactions and who should be careful
- Directly relevant for diabetic pets. Also worth noting that xylitol, a different sweetener, is genuinely lethal to dogs. Corn syrup and cane sugar are not xylitol, but always check treat labels for it.
