Why 5596 to start

It adds up, line by line.

Every product starts at 96. Flags, the brand's transparency grade and any recall linked to this product take points away. Nothing else moves the number, and no brand can pay to move it.

Flags-36 points in all

6 flagged ingredients.

Avoid first. Each flag costs points in the score above; where a flag has an entry behind it, it links to the evidence.

Avoid-16

BHA and BHT

A preservative flagged as a possible carcinogen in animal studies; many brands have dropped it.

Caution-4

Meat and bone meal

An unnamed-mammal protein with high bone content; the least transparent protein you can buy.

Caution-4

Added sugar

A sweetener with no nutritional job; it adds calories and nothing else.

Caution-4

Meat flavor and digest

A rendered palatant from animal tissue; the vaguer the name, the less you know.

Caution-4

Added color

Color added for the buyer's eye, not a synthetic dye; your pet does not care what color it is.

Caution-4

Sulfite preservatives

A sulfite preservative, not the curing salt sodium nitrite; sulfites destroy thiamine (vitamin B1).

CTransparency

Milk-Bone

The classic biscuit still leans on meat and bone meal and BHA, listed twice on the current panel.

Relies on ingredients that don't name their source species. The C grade takes 5 points off this product's score.

Independent testing & contaminants

No independent testing on file.

Third-party lab findings for things that never appear on an ingredient label. This is separate from the score above and does not change it.

We haven't found published third-party lab results (PFAS, heavy metals, phthalates) for this product. That is not a clean bill of health, just an absence of data.

  • Oct 24, 2026 Panel Score 51 → 55: removed “Unnamed animal ingredients”. “Unnamed animal ingredients” was a flag of our own for lines that don't say which animal they come from. We retired it on October 24, 2026 for the entries our library has for those lines, each counted once. The lines behind it, “Meat and bone meal” and “Poultry digest”, already carried Meat and bone meal and Meat flavor and digest, so they were being counted twice.
  • Oct 16, 2026 “BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole)” is now “BHA and BHT”, and “Sodium metabisulfite” is now “Sulfite preservatives”. The score did not change. The beef fat is preserved with BHA and BHT, so the flag now names both. The sulfite flag now carries the name of the entry that covers every sulfite preservative.
  • Sep 22, 2026 Panel Score 55 → 51: added a caution for Meat flavor and digest. The panel lists “Poultry digest”. Our ingredient library did not recognise that wording until this line was added on September 22, 2026, so the record was not carrying the flag.
  • Sep 22, 2026 “Corn syrup” is now “Added sugar”; “Artificial colors” is now “Added color”; “Sodium nitrite” is now “Sodium metabisulfite”. The score did not change. The panel lists sugar, not corn syrup. The panel says only “Added color” and names no synthetic dye. The panel lists sodium metabisulfite, a sulfite preservative, not the curing salt sodium nitrite.
  • Sep 21, 2026 Panel Score 83 → 55: added flags for BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), Corn syrup, Meat and bone meal and Sodium nitrite. The printed panel lists it and our record was not carrying the flag.
