Save it to your pantry and the pantry page flags it if it turns up in an FDA recall we import.
It adds up, line by line.
Every product starts at 96. Flags, the brand's transparency grade and any recall linked to this product take points away. Nothing else moves the number, and no brand can pay to move it.

7 flagged ingredients.
Avoid first. Each flag costs points in the score above; where a flag has an entry behind it, it links to the evidence.
BHA (preservative)
A preservative flagged as a possible carcinogen in animal studies; many brands have dropped it.
Added sugar
A sweetener with no nutritional job; it adds calories and nothing else.
Propylene glycol
A humectant banned in cat food for red-blood-cell effects; purely textural in dog products.
Smoke flavor
A flavoring made from condensed wood smoke. In 2023 EFSA found genotoxic substances in most of the eight smoke flavorings on the EU market, and the EU has since withdrawn all eight; the label doesn't say which flavoring this is.
Added color
Color added for the buyer's eye, not a synthetic dye; your pet does not care what color it is.
Artificial flavor
A lab-made flavor blend disclosed no further than the words on the label.
Natural flavor
An undisclosed blend. Not harmful per se, but it hides what your pet is actually tasting.

The brand behind it.
Milk-Bone
The classic biscuit still leans on meat and bone meal and BHA, listed twice on the current panel.
Relies on ingredients that don't name their source species. The C grade takes 5 points off this product's score.
Milk-Bone brand pageIndependent testing & contaminants
No independent testing on file.
Third-party lab findings for things that never appear on an ingredient label. This is separate from the score above and does not change it.
We haven't found published third-party lab results (PFAS, heavy metals, phthalates) for this product. That is not a clean bill of health, just an absence of data.

- Oct 24, 2026 Panel Score 55 → 51: removed “Unnamed animal ingredients”, and added cautions for Smoke flavor and Natural flavor. “Unnamed animal ingredients” was a flag of our own for lines that don't say which animal they come from. We retired it on October 24, 2026 for the entries our library has for those lines, each counted once. Nothing on this panel is one of those entries: it names beef and chicken, and its bone phosphate is a mineral source and its fish oil a fat, neither of which we flag. The panel lists “Natural Smoke Flavor”: in 2023 the European Food Safety Authority found genotoxic substances in most of the eight smoke flavorings on the EU market, and the EU has since withdrawn all eight, so since October 24, 2026 a smoke flavor reads as a caution of its own. We used to read it as a neutral flavoring. It also prints “Natural And Artificial Flavors”, which names two flavorings. Until October 24, 2026 we read the line as the artificial flavor alone; it now raises both, each counted once.
- Sep 22, 2026 Replaced the summary panel with the ingredient list the brand publishes on its website. Panel Score 67 → 55: added flags for Added sugar, Propylene glycol, Added color and Artificial flavor, and removed Artificial colors. The earlier panel was written from a search summary in July 2026 and had not been checked. The new list comes from the brand's own website, checked on September 22, 2026.
