Potato or cassava root, dried and ground, or refined down to pure starch.
Watched ingredients get highlighted on every product panel you open.
- Where it comes from
- Vegetable processing and starch refineries.
- Why it's in the product
- The binder that replaces grain in grain-free formulas. Starch is what makes extruded kibble hold its shape.
- Safety and toxicity
- Safe as used. Refined starches are close to pure carbohydrate, so a grain-free food built on potato and tapioca is not automatically lower in carbs than a grain-inclusive one. Raw green potato and potato leaves contain solanine, which is toxic, but that is not what is in the bag.
- Interactions and who should be careful
- Total carbohydrate load is the thing to weigh for overweight or diabetic pets, not the specific starch.
