3 flagged ingredients.
Avoid first. Each flag costs points in the score above; where a flag has an entry behind it, it links to the evidence.
Smoke flavor
A flavoring made from condensed wood smoke. In 2023 EFSA found genotoxic substances in most of the eight smoke flavorings on the EU market, and the EU has since withdrawn all eight; the label doesn't say which flavoring this is.
Carrageenan
A seaweed thickener linked to gut inflammation in some lab studies.
Chamomile
An herb ASPCA's poison control lists as toxic to dogs and cats (vomiting, diarrhea, skin reactions); we flag it where a pet eats or swallows it.

The brand behind it.
Natural Balance
A widely available brand with batch-level safety testing and detailed panels across a large recipe lineup.
Publishes a Feed with Confidence testing program and names its vitamin and mineral premix in full; a natural-flavor catch-all keeps it shy of an A. The B grade takes 2 points off this product's score.

Panel Score 90 out of 100, grade A: Pretty goodIndependent testing & contaminants
No independent testing on file.
Third-party lab findings for things that never appear on an ingredient label. This is separate from the score above and does not change it.
We haven't found published third-party lab results (PFAS, heavy metals, phthalates) for this product. That is not a clean bill of health, just an absence of data.

- Oct 25, 2026 Panel Score 86 → 82: added a caution for Chamomile. The panel lists “dried chamomile”. The ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center lists chamomile as toxic to dogs and cats, so since October 25, 2026 chamomile reads as a caution of its own in anything a pet eats or swallows. We used to file it with turmeric, as a neutral spice.
- Oct 24, 2026 Panel Score 90 → 86: added a caution for Smoke flavor. The panel lists “natural smoke flavor”. In 2023 the European Food Safety Authority found genotoxic substances in most of the eight smoke flavorings on the EU market, and the EU has since withdrawn all eight, so since October 24, 2026 a smoke flavor reads as a caution of its own. We used to read it as a neutral flavoring.
