Why there is no score.
We have no entry yet for 3 of the 29 ingredient lines on this panel. A line we can't read would count as clean, so we give no number until we can read at least 90% of them. Holding the package? Send us the back of it and we will read it properly.
How we decide5 flagged ingredients.
Avoid first. Where a flag has an entry behind it, it links to the evidence.
BHA (preservative)
A preservative flagged as a possible carcinogen in animal studies; many brands have dropped it.
Added sugar
A sweetener with no nutritional job; it adds calories and nothing else.
Natural flavor
An undisclosed blend. Not harmful per se, but it hides what your pet is actually tasting.
Smoke flavor
A flavoring made from condensed wood smoke. In 2023 EFSA found genotoxic substances in most of the eight smoke flavorings on the EU market, and the EU has since withdrawn all eight; the label doesn't say which flavoring this is.
Added color
Color added for the buyer's eye, not a synthetic dye; your pet does not care what color it is.
Every ingredient, top to bottom.
Listed by weight, so the first few lines are most of the food. Tap any line to see what it is and why it's there.
29 ingredients. 6 of them carry this product's 5 flags and are marked below. The other 20 raised no flag. 3 lines aren't in our library yet, so we couldn't check them; they're marked Not checked.

The brand behind it.
Beggin'
Purina's bacon-look treat: wheat base, sugar, and dye, little actual meat.
Wheat-and-glycerin strips colored to look like bacon.
Beggin' brand pageIndependent testing & contaminants
No independent testing on file.
Third-party lab findings for things that never appear on an ingredient label. This is separate from the score above and does not change it.
We haven't found published third-party lab results (PFAS, heavy metals, phthalates) for this product. That is not a clean bill of health, just an absence of data.
What we look forThis page was corrected 4 times.
- Oct 24, 2026 Added a caution for Smoke flavor. The page still shows Not enough data. The panel lists “natural hickory smoke”. In 2023 the European Food Safety Authority found genotoxic substances in most of the eight smoke flavorings on the EU market, and the EU has since withdrawn all eight, so since October 24, 2026 a smoke flavor reads as a caution of its own. We used to read it as a neutral flavoring.
- Oct 16, 2026 “BHA and BHT” is now “BHA (preservative)”. The page still shows Not enough data. The panel lists BHA and no BHT. The flag now names what the panel prints.
- Sep 22, 2026 “Corn syrup” is now “Added sugar”; “Artificial colors” is now “Added color”. The score did not change. The panel lists sugar, not corn syrup. The panel says only “added color” and names no synthetic dye.
- Sep 21, 2026 Panel Score 63 → 60: brand transparency grade set to D. We graded every brand in the catalogue from its own panels. Beggin' was ungraded, and the formula scores an ungraded brand as a C, so the grade moved the number.
