Save it to your pantry and the pantry page flags it if it turns up in an FDA recall we import.
It adds up, line by line.
Every product starts at 96. Flags, the brand's transparency grade and any recall linked to this product take points away. Nothing else moves the number, and no brand can pay to move it.

Clean Paws Clumping Clay Litter with Febreze
Good, check the flags
Scored October 2026 · checkthepanel.com
3 flagged ingredients.
Avoid first. Each flag costs points in the score above; where a flag has an entry behind it, it links to the evidence.
Clay litter dust
Clay litter dust is a chronic airway irritant, and cats sit right in the cloud.
Fragrance
One word that can legally hide dozens of undisclosed compounds; a common trigger for skin and airway irritation.
Borates
Boron salts; at high doses, boric acid and borax affected reproduction and development in animal studies. The caution is about the ingredient, not a known harm at these amounts.

The brand behind it.
Fresh Step
Clorox's clay litter line; activated charcoal plus paw-activated Febreze fragrance.
Names clay and charcoal but keeps its "technology" proprietary and adds Febreze fragrance. The C grade takes 5 points off this product's score.

No Panel Score: not enough dataIndependent testing & contaminants
No independent testing on file.
Third-party lab findings for things that never appear on an ingredient label. This is separate from the score above and does not change it.
We haven't found published third-party lab results (PFAS, heavy metals, phthalates) for this product. That is not a clean bill of health, just an absence of data.

This page was corrected once.
- Oct 24, 2026 Panel Score 83 → 79: “Crystalline silica dust” is now “Clay litter dust”, and added a caution for Borates. Our library names the clay caution “Clay litter dust”. The panel lists “Antimicrobial agent (borates)”, as Fresh Step's own FAQ does (checked on October 24, 2026). Until October 24, 2026 our library filed borates and the Febreze fragrance under one litter entry, so the two lines raised one caution; they are two different ingredients, and each now has its own.
