Save it to your pantry and the pantry page flags it if it turns up in an FDA recall we import.
It adds up, line by line.
Every product starts at 96. Flags, the brand's transparency grade and any recall linked to this product take points away. Nothing else moves the number, and no brand can pay to move it.

5 flagged ingredients.
Avoid first. Each flag costs points in the score above; where a flag has an entry behind it, it links to the evidence.
BHA (preservative)
A preservative flagged as a possible carcinogen in animal studies; many brands have dropped it.
Meat and bone meal
An unnamed-mammal protein with high bone content; the least transparent protein you can buy.
Animal fat
Rendered fat from unnamed species, and the ingredient where BHA most often hides.
Natural flavor
An undisclosed blend. Not harmful per se, but it hides what's actually in the recipe.
Artificial colors
Dyes that exist to sell the food to you; your pet does not care what color it is.

The brand behind it.
Pedigree
Grocery staple built on corn, unnamed meat and bone meal, BHA-preserved animal fat, and four synthetic dyes.
Relies on ingredients that don't name their source species. Publishes testing or sourcing information. The C grade takes 5 points off this product's score.
Pedigree brand pageIndependent testing & contaminants
No independent testing on file.
Third-party lab findings for things that never appear on an ingredient label. This is separate from the score above and does not change it.
We haven't found published third-party lab results (PFAS, heavy metals, phthalates) for this product. That is not a clean bill of health, just an absence of data.

This page was corrected once.
- Oct 24, 2026 Panel Score 63 → 59: “Unnamed animal ingredients” is now “Meat and bone meal” and “Animal fat”, and “Added colors” is now “Artificial colors”. “Unnamed animal ingredients” was a flag of our own for lines that don't say which animal they come from. We retired it on October 24, 2026 for the entries our library has for those lines, each counted once: “Meat and bone meal” is Meat and bone meal and “Animal fat (source of omega 6 fatty acids, preserved with BHA and citric acid)” is Animal fat. One flag had been standing for two different ingredients. Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6 and Blue 2 are certified dyes, so the color flag takes the name our library gives them.
