Save it to your pantry and the pantry page flags it if it turns up in an FDA recall we import.
It adds up, line by line.
Every product starts at 96. Flags, the brand's transparency grade and any recall linked to this product take points away. Nothing else moves the number, and no brand can pay to move it.

Good, check the flags

3 flagged ingredients.
Avoid first. Each flag costs points in the score above; where a flag has an entry behind it, it links to the evidence.
Meat flavor and digest
A rendered palatant from animal tissue; the vaguer the name, the less you know.
Added color
Color added for the buyer's eye, not a synthetic dye; your pet does not care what color it is.
Added sugar
A sweetener with no nutritional job; it adds calories and nothing else.

The brand behind it.
Hill's Science Diet
Vet-clinic staple with published feeding studies; panels name their species, with a natural-flavors catch-all near the end.
Names its meat sources on the panel. Publishes testing or sourcing information. The A grade takes nothing off this product's score.

Panel Score 92 out of 100, grade A: Pretty goodIndependent testing & contaminants
No independent testing on file.
Third-party lab findings for things that never appear on an ingredient label. This is separate from the score above and does not change it.
We haven't found published third-party lab results (PFAS, heavy metals, phthalates) for this product. That is not a clean bill of health, just an absence of data.

- Oct 16, 2026 Panel Score 88 → 84: added a caution for Added sugar. The panel lists dextrose, a sugar. Until October 16, 2026 we left it unread while we decided how to read sweeteners; it now reads as an added sugar.
- Oct 16, 2026 Replaced the panel Open Pet Food Facts volunteers transcribed with the ingredient list Hill's publishes on its website. Panel Score 92 → 88: added a caution for Meat flavor and digest. Hill's list, checked on October 14, 2026, names “hydrolyzed chicken flavor” where the transcribed panel said “chicken liver flavor”, and it does not list titanium dioxide. Both are meat flavors, so the record should have carried this caution before: until October 16, 2026 we read “chicken liver flavor” as chicken liver, the organ meat. Caramel color is on both lists, so the caution for Added color stays.
- Sep 22, 2026 “Artificial colors” is now “Added color”. The score did not change. The panel lists caramel color, not a synthetic dye such as Red 40.
- Sep 21, 2026 Panel Score 87 → 92: brand transparency grade set to A. We graded every brand in the catalogue from its own panels. Hill's Science Diet was ungraded, and the formula scores an ungraded brand as a C, so the grade moved the number.
