Beads or crystals of silica gel, the amorphous form of silicon dioxide, that soak up liquid and hold odor. Crystal litters are made of it.
Watched ingredients get highlighted on every product panel you open.
- Where it comes from
- Made from sodium silicate, the same material as the drying packets that come in shoe boxes and food packages.
- Why it's in the product
- Absorbs urine and holds odor. Most crystal litters don't clump; some add a binder such as guar gum so they do.
- Safety and toxicity
- Amorphous silica, the form in silica gel, is a different and less hazardous form than the crystalline silica behind the Clay litter dust flag, so this entry carries no flag.
- Interactions and who should be careful
- Some brands add a color-changing indicator to the crystals. When the maker doesn't say what it is, that line carries its own caution as an undisclosed material.
