Pyrethrins and synergists
Also appears on labels as: pyrethrins, piperonyl butoxide, n-octyl bicycloheptene dicarboximide, mgk 264
Pyrethrins are insecticides extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Piperonyl butoxide and MGK 264 (N-octyl bicycloheptene dicarboximide) are synergists: they slow the insect's breakdown of an insecticide.
Watched ingredients get highlighted on every product panel you open.
- Where it comes from
- Pyrethrins come from dried chrysanthemum flowers; the synergists are made synthetically.
- Why it's in the product
- Insecticide in sprays and carpet powders, with a synergist beside it.
- Safety and toxicity
- Flagged as a pesticide active, like every active in this aisle: the flag says what the ingredient is, not that it is riskier than the rest. Follow the label's species, weight band and directions.
We make the longer argument about this one on the pesticide actives evidence page.
