- The leaves, skin and pit contain persin, a toxin that is dangerous to birds, horses and some farm animals. Dogs and cats are far less sensitive, and the flesh and oil used in pet food are not known to cause problems. The pit is a choking and blockage risk, so a whole avocado is still not a treat.
