Activated carbon
Also appears on labels as: activated charcoal, carbon filter
Carbon from coconut shell, wood or coal, treated at high heat until it is full of tiny pores. That inner surface holds odor and taste compounds that pass over it.
Watched ingredients get highlighted on every product panel you open.
- Where it comes from
- Charred plant material or coal, activated with steam or chemicals.
- Why it's in the product
- Odor control in litter, and taste and odor control in a fountain's filter. It adds no scent of its own.
- Safety and toxicity
- Nothing to flag. It holds compounds on its surface rather than adding anything, and it is not a fragrance, so the reasons we flag scented odor control do not apply to it.
- Interactions and who should be careful
- Its pores fill up with use, which is why fountain makers give a schedule for changing the filter. In litter it is thrown out with the litter.
