Stainless steel
Steel with chromium added, which forms a thin surface film that keeps it from rusting. Bowls and fountain tanks are often the 304 grade, also sold as 18/8.
Watched ingredients get highlighted on every product panel you open.
- Where it comes from
- Steel mills, then stamped or drawn into bowls, trays and tanks.
- Why it's in the product
- Food bowls, water trays and fountain tanks. It doesn't scratch the way plastic does, so it is easier to keep clean, and it holds up in a dishwasher.
- Safety and toxicity
- Nothing to flag. It needs no plasticizer or coating to do its job.
- Interactions and who should be careful
- A steel fountain still has a plastic pump and spout, and those parts need the same cleaning as any plastic fountain.
