- Chemically about as benign as toy material gets. The risk is entirely mechanical and it is not small: swallowed rope strands are a classic linear foreign body, which can saw through intestine and is a surgical emergency. Cats are especially prone to this with string.

- Throw rope toys away once they start shedding strands, and do not leave them with an unsupervised shredder.
